The temple’s history dates back to the 17th century, during the reign of King Taksin. King Taksin had just established the Thonburi Kingdom after the fall of Ayutthaya and was looking for a new capital. He chose a small fishing village on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River and renamed it Thonburi. The temple was then built as a symbol of the new kingdom and served as a royal temple for King Taksin and his successors.


Over the years, the temple underwent several renovations and expansion projects. One of the most notable additions was the Khmer-style towers, which were added during the reign of King Rama II in the early 19th century. The towers, which are made of colorful Chinese porcelain and glass, are the temple’s most distinctive feature and have become its trademark.


Wat Arun is also steeped in Buddhist symbolism. The central prang (tower) symbolizes Mount Meru, the center of the Hindu and Buddhist universe, while the four smaller prangs symbolize the Four Great Regions of the world. The intricate carvings and sculptures on the temple’s exterior depict scenes from Hindu mythology, as well as scenes from Buddhist stories and folklore.
